Annamaet Dog Food Overview

“Annamaet Petfoods Inc.” is owned and operated by founder and President Rob Downey. Along with his wife Mary Jo, as co-founder and Vice President, the couple have maintained Annamaet Petfood Inc. as a family owned business for close to thirty years.

Downey named the company after his mother, Anna Mae, and the first bag of Annamaet was sold on her birthday in 1986.

Rob Downey spent years in graduate school studying canine nutrition and exercise physiology, and has written numerous articles that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. In addition to Downey’s expertise, Annamaet has a board certified Veterinary Nutritionist on staff as well.

Where is Annamaet manufactured?

Their headquarters is based in Telford, Pennsylvania, and their manufacturing plants are located in Ohio and New York. All of their products are certified by “The Association of American Feed Control Officials” (AAFCO). In addition, their plants are “European Union” (EU) certified, and their facilities inspected by both the “U.S. Department of Agriculture” (USDA) and its agency, the “Animal and Plant Inspection Service” (APHIS). Every batch of Annamaet is sent out to an independent lab for salmonella testing before it is released for shipment. All their products that are shipped to the EU are also tested for salmonella, anthrax and genetically modified ingredients (GMOs).

The company single sources their ingredients, meaning they are bought from the same suppliers each time. Many of these suppliers have been doing business with them for over twenty years. All their meat and fish are certified as fit for human consumption.

Annamaet dog food products include:

Annamaet products are separated into two different lines: their original formulas, and their grain free formulas. All their products are corn, wheat, and soy free. They also produce “Canine Companion Treats,” which are healthy grain free treats to accompany the grain free formulas.

Annamaet is a holistic dog food, which does not contain any GMOs.

Recently, Annamaet has included algae into their products, which is a stable and totally sustainable source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Original Formulas

The original formulas are made with low ash chicken, salmon, or venison and healthy whole grains. These products contain chelated minerals and optimum levels of Omega-3 fatty acids that help to support the immune system.

Grain Free Formulas

The grain free formulas are designed for optimum health. They can also help ear, skin and coat issues, as well as chronic digestive problems.

In early 2016, Annamaet introduced the “Annamaet Sustain®” formula into their line of grain free products. The seafood in this formula is certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and contains sustainable line-caught Alaskan cod. It also contains turkey and a totally sustainable and stable form of DHA, microalgae.

Annamaet Dog Food Recalls

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) listings, there have been no recalls for any of Annamaet products since they first went into production in 1986.

Summary

Most of their ingredients are from the United States (US), but not every ingredient is available in their own country. The venison they use is free range and comes from New Zealand. Because of “Chronic Wasting Disease”(CWD) found in deer in parts of the US, they cannot use local venison. Similar to venison, lamb also cannot be sourced from the US. In order for it to be certified by the European Export Compliant Organization (EU), the lamb they use has to come from New Zealand, because it is “Scrapie” free.

Many of the best vitamin and mineral production labs are based in Europe. In fact, there are some vitamins and minerals that are not made in the US. According to Annamaet, “there is no Biotin (one of the B vitamins) produced in the US. Some Biotin is brought into the US and then diluted, allowing a company to say it is produced in the US, but ultimately it was produced elsewhere. There is no L-Carnitine produced in the US as well, therefore, if a company says that all of their vitamins and minerals come from the US either they are unaware, or they are lying.”

We live in a global economy and many parts of the world produce some very quality items. Annamaet refuses to use any ingredients that comes from tainted sources. According to Annamaet, this is a major reason they have formulated their own vitamin and mineral package. The company says that “this way we can be sure where each ingredient is produced and what lab produces it, not just where it is purchased from.”

Annamaet Petfoods Inc. is a company that prides itself on producing only high quality and nutritious products. Annamaet says they like to tell people that “not only are we feeding your dogs and cats, we are also feeding our own.”

Based on the ingredients that are used in their products, as well as, never having any recalls, makes their dog food a highly recommended choice. Also, their frankness about where their ingredients come from proves them to be a trustworthy company.
